To Do

. Summarise & conclude issues raised from Crit Session.

. Identify problem within brief.
- Whether it be the negative connotations of Nike / Corporate

. Develop Nike ID further. Defining the concept behind it, thoughts on promotion and branding of it etc.

. What do I want to do within the brief / in line with finding a problem to solve

. Check initial brain storm for further areas of research

. Find a reason and a means to get in touch with appropriate professionals.

Crit 02/03/11

Crit session, went okay got some decent ideas from it which I noted down but have since lost my notebook, awesome.

Overall what I got was positive, but an issue raised was the board artwork brief has become complicated and the problem at hand or rather what I'm trying to achieve has become lost. A point given that it won't necessarily give me the opportunity to actually design. This however i slightly disagree with as it then becomes more than just a piece of design, which essentially anyone can do. It becomes a more concept driven solution to a problem.

Questions I took to the crit...

Answers...

Some interesting ideas, direction 4 for the Nike brief was said to be the best direction (minus the negative aspect of not being able to design) from this the issue of promotion / advertising / branding of it was raised. This possibly being the main aspect of design for the brief.
Concerning Brief Two, advised to do a re-brand / or something completely new for it.

3rd March Meeting

For this meeting we had decided to go away and prepare two design proposals that adhered to rules that we defined in our previous meeting.
These rules being,

. Specific Grid,
9 column, 3mm gutter, 9mm margins, side, top & bottom.

. Headers.
Agreed to use a universal header throughout the book, the size and position of which being flexible.

The following is my proposed designs adhering to the rules...

Lorenzo and Jo sat in on the meeting and we presented our ideas to them.
The feedback we got was positive yet there is much left to do and work on.

An issue raised was that all of the designs were quite safe and between all 4 of us they looked pretty much the same. We were advised that we needed to go away and really play around with it, throwing in all sorts of different ideas and essentially have fun with it, push it as far as possible. As any 'wacky' out there ideas can always be refined and made less mental.
Furthermore the point was made that we are an Art college and we shouldn't be wanting or doing plain, corporate stuff, we have the excuse to be a bit mental and try new and exciting things, so thats the plan.

On top of this feedback we were advised on what we should have ready for the next meeting / time we see any of the tutors,

Experimentation with pages and designs
Alternative design routes
Print outs (Specific to point size and imagery)
Mock ups of designs

So, plan of action...

From the meeting we decided to design 2 alternative routes  (on the back of what feedback we got) as well as making a safe version from combining the designs we bought to todays meeting.

Questionnaire

Proposed questionnaire to send to boarding brands that use labels on their boards...

. What is the aim or purpose of the labels you stick on the boards?

. Do you consider covering the design of the board an issue?

. Who designs the labels for you guys? Is it the same people who design the board artwork?
In house?

. Have you guys always used a sticker format for the labels?

. Would you be open to trying something new and different?

. I am proposing the idea of creating a label much similar to swing tags on clothing. This label being attached to a screw which is inside one of the binding holes. Would you consider this to be a realistic proposition? Also would you consider it to be an improvement or an unnecessary change?

I intend to send this out to the following board brands....

Artec
Burton
Bataleon
Forum
Endeavor
Signal
Salomon
Ride
Omatic

To Do

. Evaluate findings from research visit
-What has been put on the labels? What is of importance in my opinion and why? What can be lost?

. Get in contact with boarding brands that use labels and ask relevant appropriate questions.
- Figure out questions to ask

. Initial designs, taking concept further.

. More concepts and ideas.

. Whats the problem? Solve it.
